Over 20 Olympic champions, coaches and other global sports figures have put their names to a letter urging a halt to the capital punishment of a boxing champion and coach, who is on death row in the country.

Growing Worldwide Condemnation

Amidst rising international outrage over the country's escalating use of capital punishment as a means of repression, the powerfully expressed letter denounces the Iranian regime's decision to maintain the death sentence of the athlete.

Vafaei Sani, 30, from the city in the northern province, was taken into custody for taking part in countrywide demonstrations in two thousand nineteen and indicted of supporting an dissident organization. He has spent half a decade in incarceration, where he has been abused and held in isolation.

“Sport is designed to encourage faith, togetherness, and courage,” the signatories stated. “The death penalty of a winner for his political views is a clear violation on these ideals and a admonition to any competitor who ventures to speak out.

History of Killing Athletes

The appeal noted that the boxer's circumstances was not an isolated one and highlighted the nation's history of executing sports champions for their views, such as a football captain, leader of the national football team, and a women's sports leader, captain of the women's volleyball squad. In the year 2020, Navid Afkari, a 27-year national wrestling champion, was put to death.

Other signatories to the appeal include a sailing champion, who skippered the inaugural women's squad in a global yacht race and was the first woman to be awarded a prestigious yachting trophy; the ex- captain of the soccer side a sports advocate; and a sports figure, who was in the national team for the 1978 World Cup.

Apprehension and Flawed Legal Process

The athlete was arrested in early 2020. The charges against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through incendiarism and damage of state assets”. His verdict has been overturned multiple times but on the fourth of October it was confirmed on the third occasion. His court case was denounced as “highly unjust” by rights defenders and bodies.

Urging to International Body

The urging to stop the athlete's capital punishment comes after a 2023 letter to the United Nations official for rights, endorsed by in excess of one hundred human rights experts and entities, urging intervention to prevent the athlete’s capital punishment.
