Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
