Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
